This is the first journal I've consciously kept as an every-day commitment, and followed through with. I'm rather proud of that,  but I'm happier still that I recorded at the time what it was like to travel through Thailand.

We flew out of Langkawi, Malaysia, on the 13th of February, 2007, and returned via ferry on the 23rd. In between we traveled through central and northern Thailand, admittedly not seeing as much of the country as I would have liked but not doing too badly for 10 days of plane flights, walking city streets, taking trains and taxis and tuk-tuks, renting cars, hiking through hills, riding on elephants and bamboo rafts.

A small overview of the trip: We flew into Bangkok and spent two days exploring the capitol, riding the river ferry, seeing the old palace and the temple district, before taking a train to Chiang Mai, in the north. From Chiang Mai we rented a car and drove to Doi Inthanon, the highest point in Thailand, where we hiked through the forest and along an escarpment with rhododendrons. We then took a trek/tour into the hills north of Chiang Mai for three days, staying at hill-tribe villages and eating local food. That was rounded off by an afternoon of riding elephants down a river and the next morning taking bamboo rafts down the more rapid part of the river. We then flew back to Bangkok and drove to Kanchanaburi, where we visited the Tiger Temple (yes, with real tigers) and saw the famous Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway. The last day, which was one of traveling and which I did not actually write about, was spent flying from Bangkok to Hat Yai in the south of Thailand, getting a bus to the coast, and taking the ferry across to Langkawi.

You can also see my parents' impressions of the Thai Interior in the Destinations section.
